A Profile of Zhejiang Forestry University

Founded in 1958,Zhejiang Forestry University (ZFU) is directly under Zhejiang Province featuring in agriculture and forestry. It provides mainly bachelor’s programs and some Master’s programs. ZFU, located in the western suburb of Hangzhou city, has two campuses covering an area of 155 hectares. Its first-class environment makes it a most suitable place for learning, teaching and research.

ZFU consists of 13 schools and one division, 33 disciplines and 37 undergraduate majors, covering eight areas of study. It can award master’s degree in silviculture, wood science and technology, forest reservation and forest business management.

ZFU has 31 research units, five key provincial disciplines and a group of scientific and technological innovation bases, such as Modern Forest-breeding Lab (Key provincial lab), Wood Technology Research Center of Zhejiang Province, and Fine Timber-breeding Base of State Forestry Bureau.

In recent 5 years 700 plus research projects have been carried out, 12 projects have been patented and 37 projects have been awarded for achievements from ministries and the provincial government. Nearly 2,000 academic articles and 123 monographs of the faculty have been published domestically or abroad.

The Journal of Zhejiang Forestry University is one of the key journals in comprehensive agricultural and forestry field. It has been included in many key retrieval journals and database domestically or abroad, such as Russian Digest, American Chemical Digest, Cambridge Digest of Sciences, English CABI Digest, Animal Records.  

ZFU has over 600 faculty members, of whom two are members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one is member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one is an outstanding professor specially employed by the provincial government, and more than 200 are professors or associate professors.

ZFU has actively been seeking international cooperation and exchange, and has successively established inter-university ties with more than 10 institutions of higher learning in such countries and regions as Hong Kong, the US, Australia, Japan, Canada, Russia, Holland, Ukraine and South Korea. Foreign experts and researchers are invited to teach at the university all the year around.

ZFU recruits students from 18 provinces and cities, and has an enrollment of 12500 plus students. Our graduates are welcome in all trades for their good practical ability, excellent comprehensive quality, and adaptability in society. The employment rate of our graduates is among the top lines in colleges and universities of Zhejiang province.

ZFU will be a multi-disciplinary key provincial university with biological subjects and environmental subjects as its distinguish feature, in combination with sciences, engineering, management and humanities according to its 10-year-plan by the year of 2013, and will be a teaching and research-oriented university, famous in China in the year of 2020.

■  A Brief Introduction to East Lake Campus

The new campus of Zhejiang Forestry University (East Lake Campus) is 1.2 km north of old campus. It is located up the north circular highway, and on the south slope of Southern Hill. With an area of 124.4 ha, it covers mainly flat ground and hill slope, forming a well-arranged relief.

The new campus is designed in accordance with planned 15,000 students; the floorage of all buildings is 450,000 square meters, which will be constructed in several stages. The first group of students enrolled in 2002 have settled in this campus already. The buildings of first stage will be completed by 2005 with a floorage of 300,000 square meters, which will meet the needs of 10,000 students.

The East Lake Campus is designed on the basis of a high starting point, constructed by high standards, arranged in an environment of high taste, managed on a high level, providing service of high efficiency and offering education of high quality. The general designing idea is: upholding the nature, improving the environment, suiting activities to local conditions, creating distinctive features for campus, taking human beings as principle elements, and harmonizing human beings with the nature. The environment of new campus is made according to the standards of first class in our country. The new campus will be a botanical garden with most plant species in Zhejiang province, and a green campus of ecological balance, tourist attraction and science popularization.
