A brief introduction to the Zhejiang University of Technology

The year 1953 saw the establishment of a new Zhejiang University of Technology in Hangzhou, the picturesque historical and cultural city in China. Dating back to 1910 as Zhejiang Secondary Chemical School, the university has successively experienced different stages, namely, Hangzhou Chemical School, Zhejiang Chemical Academy, Zhejiang Chemical College, and Zhejiang Engineering College and then the present university—a key comprehensive university of provincial level. Centering upon major courses of science subjects, ZUT also covers other subjects like liberal art, physics, law, economics, medical science, industrial and commercial management and education . Facilitated with a national key labortary centre and a post-doctoral exchange station, the university is entitled to grant master's degrees, doctor's degrees, MBA degrees and the degrees of Engineering masters. Besides,it is qualified to enroll examination-free postgraduates and foreign students as well as students from Hangkong, Macow, and Taiwan.

The university now has 3 divisions, covering a total area of 3200 mu with the floorage of over 700 thousand square meters. It has set up 20 colleges and 2 departments including College of Chemical and Material Engineering, College of Electromechanical Engineering, College of Civil Engineering and Architecture, College of Information Engineering, College of Economic and Trading Management, College of Vocational and Technical Education, College of Biological and Enviromental Engineering, College of Humanities, College of Art, International School, College of Physics, College of Foreign Language, Law School, College of Medical Science, College of Zhijiang Division, College of Adult Education, College of Software Engineering, Social Scientific Department and Department of P.E. Lessons and Military Training. The university now has about 21,000 full-time undergraduates and diplomats, together with 1200 postgraduates. The number of teaching staff has reached about 2700, among whom 716 are professors and associate professors and 4 are academicians shared by Chinese Academy of Science and Chinese Academy of Engineering. Now it has five doctoral stations，thirty-eight masters’ stations, and forty-nine undergraduate majors. The value of its assets totals about 958 million Yuan, among which 110 million is classified as the assets of educational and scientific research facilities. The 32 thousand square-meter university library now has stored about 2190 thousand volumes(electronic books included) and over 17000 kinds of China and foreign journals and periodicals.

With the aim of developing into a national-brand university of education and research, we take the “initiatively adapt ourselves to Zhejiang economic construction and social development” as the guideline, and thus make full efforts to turn into a researching and exploring foundation for engineering science and technology as well as a training center of advanced engineering and technical talents. Owing to years of hard working, we have realized two transformations. In terms of structure transformation, we have set up eight major subjects including physics, engineering, literal, law, economics, education, management and medical science, successfully transforming itself from a one-dimensional university to a comparatively comprehensive one. In terms of content transformation, we have improved the researching capacities and shifted our priority from education to education combined with scientific research. Now we have already possessed 1 key provincial cooperation laboratory base for “Green Chemical Synthesis", 3 key provincial laboratories and intermediate experimental bases, 20 key province-supporting subjects, 5 engineering scientific exploitation and research centers, 6 engineering educational centers. Apart from that , about 200 achievements have won the National, Provincial and Departmental Prize in Scientific Inventions and the Prize of achievements in Scientific Researches, among which 8 have won the National Prize of Invention and the National Progress Prize in Science and Technology. Meanwhile, about 200 inventions have got patents. And by the year 2003, the science research expenditure has reached about 169 million yuan. In addition to project exploitations, efforts have also been put on academic research. In the year 2003, 114,83 and 52 articles were seperately excerpted by the top three international index agencies:EI, SCI, and ISTP .

Constantly adhering to the aim of cultivating high quality and creative talents and improve students' integral capacity, the university lays much emphasis on basic theoretical education as well as the development of practical abilities.By deepening the educational reformation, the university has enhanced its educational qualities in an all-round way, which can be proved by the fact that our students have achieved remarkably many times in the national or international competitions of college students on mathematical modeling, electronic designing, architectural designing, and won many national prizes. To name just a few, a third place in the preliminary session of the 28th World Programming Competition; a first prize ,two second prizes and two third prizes in the National Challenge Cup Scientific Research Contest . At the same time, the Ministry of Education has ratified us as the second key national base of teachers and staffs' training, the third national educational technique-training center. The graduates are generally welcomed by the society with their solid basis and stong competence in engineering and technology. Up till now, many of them have become the backbones in the modernization drive, contributing a lot to Zhejiang and China's economic development.

To better facilitate increasingly vigorous external communication activities, we have established intercollegiate coordinate parternerships with about 28 universities from America, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Belgium, Australia and Russia to conduct academic exchanges, scientific researches and cooperation. Meanwhile, a training center has been set up with the joint efforts of Normandy Region in France, and we also have undergraduates-cultivating cooperation with Tasmana in Australia. Overseas students from about 15 countries have been enrolled here to learn Chinese, Chinese culture and undergraduate courses of specialties.
Under the guidance of combing subject establishment with scientific research exploitation, the University Machinery Workshop, Chemical Plant and the Factory of Chemical Equipment have developede into Zhejiang key Enterprise of School-running industries and hence was appointed by the Construction Department of the Ministry of Chemicals as a designated manufacturing enterprise. To adapt itself to the trend of the optimization, the university set up logistic group corp. and rear service system to meet the demand of educational renovation.

For what we have achieved, our university has successively won many honorary titles as “the National College of Excellence in Party Building and Ideological and Political Works”, “the National Advanced Department of Educational Administration”, “the National Advanced Educational Unit in the Management of Science and Technology”, “the National Advanced Collective in Administration of Academic degrees and Postgraduate Educations” and “the National Advanced Unit of Higher Learning in Job Assignment for Graduates”.
